CHAPTER

TWENTY-FOUR

LANDER, WYOMING

J.D. Blunt tried to control his rage as he stared intently at Lennox. Spending years in espionage, Blunt had experienced his fair share of betrayal, so the feeling was nothing new. But this felt different. He had considered Lennox a friend—and a good one at that. There was no coming back from this, no matter how much Lennox groveled, something that was already in full swing.

“Look, J.D., you’ve got to understand,” Lennox began. “I didn’t want to—”

“Shut up and turn around before I waste you right here,” Blunt said, his tone measured with a biting edge to it.

Lennox complied, giving Blunt the opportunity to finally get out some of his anger. He pistol whipped Lennox in the back of the head, knocking him out.

While Lennox was unconscious, Blunt tied him to a large pine tree and pulled out a collapsible stool from his ruck sack and positioned it about 10 feet away from Lennox. After a few minutes, Lennox groggily regained consciousness.

“What happened?” Lennox asked.

Blunt didn’t believe Lennox had forgotten so soon and kept a gun trained on him.

“What the hell, J.D.?” Lennox asked. “Why are you doing this?”

“Cut the shit, Frank,” Blunt said. “You know damn well why you’re tied up like this. Pretending you have amnesia won’t fly with me.”

“Did you hit me?”

Blunt said nothing, maintaining his steely gaze with Lennox.

“I mean, I don’t necessarily blame you if you did, but you clearly don’t understand what’s going on here.”

“Enlighten me,” Blunt said.

“There’s much more happening beneath the surface that you don’t see, even within our own government,” Lennox began. “Things need to be changed.”

“Things always need to be changed, but we have a way of going about it—and it doesn’t include whatever it is that you think you’re doing.”

“I understand how you would be upset, especially with how good of friends we are and me not bringing you in on this earlier.”

“Earlier?” Blunt scoffed. “More like never since—might I remind you that—you just tried to kill me?”

“I know. It’s complicated.”

“There’s nothing complicated about putting a bullet in someone else. You want them dead. You aim. You pull the trigger. You see if you hit the target. If you didn’t, you try again. See? Not that complicated.”

“I understand that’s how it looked to you but—”

“Bullshit,” Blunt said. “I’m tired of your bullshit, Frank. Now, if you’re not going to tell me what the hell this was all about, I’m going to end this conversation. And I can promise you, it won’t be complicated.”

Lennox took a deep breath. “Okay, okay. I’ll tell you what’s happening, but promise me that you’ll hear me out.”

“You’re in no position to make any demands of me. If you don’t start talking right now, I’m going to pull the trigger and let the wolves and the elk fight over you for dinner tonight. How’s that sound?”

“All right,” Lennox said. “I’m a member of the Fullgood Initiative. Happy now?”

“That doesn’t explain your sudden thirst for blood when it came to me. You mind explaining what that was about?”

“J.
